Sidewalk Fruit Tree Pilot Program – Now Accepting Residents

๐ŸŽ Grow Fruit, Grow Community: Sidewalk Fruit Tree Pilot Program

A Resident-Cared, HOA-Friendly Edible Landscaping Project
Now Accepting Applications – Limited to 20–30 Homes

Have you ever wanted to step outside your front door and pick fresh lemons, figs, or apples from your own tree? Our community has a unique opportunity to test a small-scale, resident-led fruit tree program—bringing beauty, shade, and delicious fruit to the sidewalk soil strip in front of your home.

This pilot project is a collaboration between residents and the HOA to explore adding edible trees to our landscaping in a way that’s safe, attractive, and manageable.

๐ŸŒฟ What Is the Sidewalk Fruit Tree Pilot?

We’re inviting up to 30 interested homeowners to participate in a trial program. Each participant will:

  • Plant 1–2 approved fruit trees in the soil strip between the sidewalk and their home

  • Use the existing drip irrigation system, which will be adjusted—no manual watering required

  • Handle simple maintenance like pruning, harvesting, and keeping the sidewalk clear

  • Choose whether to replace the current young ornamental tree or add the fruit tree nearby

All trees and placements must be approved by the HOA Architectural Committee.

๐ŸŒŸ Why Join?

  • ๐ŸŠ Fresh homegrown fruit at your doorstep

  • ๐ŸŒณ Improved curb appeal with edible beauty

  • ๐ŸŒž Light outdoor activity for our 55+ community

  • ๐Ÿ Support for pollinators and local wildlife

  • ๐Ÿง‘‍๐ŸŒพ Learn simple techniques like espalier pruning — ideal for compact spaces

This is a low-effort, high-impact project with long-term benefits for both individual homeowners and the entire community.

  • Beautiful in all seasons

๐Ÿ‹ Citrus Trees

  • Meyer Lemon – Prolific, sweet, compact

  • Calamondin Orange – Decorative and tasty

  • Kaffir Lime – Aromatic leaves and small fruit

  • Dwarf Bearss Lime (Persian) – Thornless, juicy, easy to train

๐ŸŽ Apple & Pear (Espalier-Compatible)

  • Dorsett Golden Apple – Early harvest, low chill

  • Anna Apple – Cross-pollinates with Dorsett

  • Hood Pear – Crisp, juicy, low chill

๐ŸŒฟ Figs & Specialty Fruits

  • Pomegranate ‘Wonderful’ or ‘Eversweet’ – Heat-loving and eye-catching

  • Loquat (dwarf varieties) – Fragrant fruit and lush foliage

๐ŸŒž Other Great Options

  • Dwarf Persimmon ‘Fuyu’ (non-astringent) – Fall beauty, sweet fruit

  • Dwarf Mulberry (‘Pakistan’ or ‘Everbearing’) – HOA approval may vary, best for homes with extra spacing

๐ŸŒฑ How It Works

  • Each front yard sidewalk strip already has:
✅ One young ornamental tree on the left
    ✅ Groundcover and mulch
✅ A drip irrigation system ready to be extended to your new fruit tree(s)

  • Residents can either:
☐ Replace the existing ornamental tree with a fruit tree
☐ Add a fruit tree nearby (with root safety and spacing guidelines followed)

  • No need to water—irrigation will be managed by the modified drip system.

  • You’ll be responsible for basic pruning, harvesting, and sidewalk safety.

๐Ÿงพ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

๐ŸŽ Summit Fruit Tree Pilot Program – FAQ ๐ŸŽ

Q: Do I have to water the tree myself?
A: No. All sidewalks in Summit already have a sprinkler system connected to each home. If needed, you’ll simply extend your existing system by adding a couple of drip lines and emitters around the tree. These supplies are available at ACE Hardware in town.

Q: Can I keep the current tree?
A: Yes. You may either replace your existing tree or request to add a fruit tree a few feet away. Both options require prior HOA approval.

Q: What if the fruit tree makes a mess?
A: Only low-litter fruit trees will be approved. Homeowners are responsible for harvesting fruit and keeping the sidewalk clean and safe.

Q: Who pays for the tree and planting?
A: Residents purchase the tree from an approved local supplier and are responsible for planting or arranging planting help.

Q: What if the tree fails?
A: Residents agree to remove or replace failed trees within 60 days. Support and guidance will be available if that happens.

Q: What kind of irrigation changes are needed?
A: If you're replacing an existing tree, irrigation lines may already be in place. Otherwise, you’ll need to add drip tubing and emitters to extend your home’s existing system to the new tree.
